Collaborative or Community Writing – The teacher and students collaborate in writing a text - in a shared manner, with a shared pen. This process is interactive, in that students do some of the writing. Teachers orally share their thought processes as the text is created, exposing the students to writing strategies. Students begin to see what good writing looks like.
Guided Writing – The teacher works with a small group of students who need similar writing instruction and support. This is an important step on the path to becoming an independent writer, and there is a gradual release of responsibility, as the students work more and more independently to feel successful when they write.
