Nurturing Young Writers: Supporting Thinking in Children’s Book Making and Oral Language Composition
Young children are capable of incredible thinking, which can be seen in their writing when they have an image of themselves as writers. Deep thinking can also be valued when children use the illustrations in picture books to compose language before they can decode. When educators honour children’s approximations in book making and reading we can support children’s compositional thinking through their illustrations, oral language composition, and writing. We will examine opportunities, strategies, and supports to have meaningful teaching conversations with children, both as a class and individually. Then, we can consider how to best nurture children’s compositional thinking across a year.
